Finance Ministry significantly strengthens AML oversight

Podgorica, (MINA-BUSINESS) – The Ministry of Finance said it has significantly stepped up oversight of the games of chance sector, with the clear objective of protecting citizens, preventing money laundering, and ensuring lawful, responsible, and transparent business operations.

“The Ministry of Finance has substantially intensified activities aimed at preventing money laundering and terrorist financing in the games of chance sector, confirming that legality, transparency, and the protection of the financial system are among the Government’s key priorities following the implementation of the new Law on Games of Chance – the first comprehensive reform of this sector in two decades,” the Ministry said in a press release.

The Ministry added that the Games of Chance Inspectorate has made AML (Anti-Money Laundering) inspections one of its top priorities this year.

“The annual inspection plan has been revised from five to 20 inspections, significantly expanding oversight in a sector that international standards recognize as being among the most exposed to money laundering risks. The message is clear: inspections will be more frequent, more thorough, and more decisive,” the press release reads.

According to the Ministry, the results are already evident. In July, inspectors successfully completed an extensive AML inspection of one gambling operator, identifying irregularities and issuing misdemeanour fines totalling €9,000.
