Brajovic: Own merit principle to be respected

Podgorica, (MINA) – Montenegro expects that the principle of merit based accession will be respected and that it would be administratively and financially supported on that path, Parliament Speaker Ivan Brajovic said.

Speaking at the Conference of Speakers of European Union Parliaments in Vienna, he said that he heard encouraging messages that Montenegro, as a good example in many segments, has friendly support and respect of its reform efforts.

Brajovic expressed expectation that, although elections for the European Parliament are to follow, continuation of the parallel processes of interior consolidation of European apparatus and element policy would ensue.

“I had open and friendly talks with a number of speakers of the European parliaments. I told to everyone I met that Montenegro, as a leader in the negotiation process and a country with great neighborly and regional policy, expects the own merits principle to be respected and to be administratively and financially supported on that path”, said he.

Brajovic added that during all the meeting he was assured that the events and circumstances in Montenegro and the region are being carefully monitored.

The conference conclusions, related to the enlargement policy, stated that the EU parliaments’ speakers confirmed European prospect of the Western Balkans countries and commitment to EU’s enlargement process, since it means investing in peace, democracy and security, and called upon the Western Balkans countries to continue with the reforms, overcome the existing conflicts and increase regional cooperation.

According to the press release from the Parliament, on the sidelines of the conference Brajovic met with heads of parliamentary delegations of Italy, Netherlands, Ireland, the Check Republic, Slovakia, France, Latvia and Lithuania.
