Fajon: Enlargement could be stopped if extreme right wins

Podgorica, (MINA) – The EU enlargement process could be stopped if the elections for the far-right parties win the forthcoming elections for the European Parliament, MEP Tanja Fajon has stated.

The EP elections are scheduled for May and, according to Fajon, they can affect the enlargement policy.

“A lot depends on which political group will win the elections. If the extreme right wins, it could happen that the enlargement process could be stopped. I’m afraid that, in that case, Western Balkan leaders would resort more to nationalism in order to preserve authority and power,” Fajon told Mina.

However, the MEP still voiced hope that the left and liberal parties will get more support and that the dream of the Western Balkans within the EU will be finally materialized.

“At the moment, it seems that the biggest friend when it comes to the integration of the Western Balkans into the EU is Germany, while France insists on the need to resolve the accumulated EU problems first and only then to open the door for new members from the Balkans,” Fajon said.

She believes that the enlargement will take place when all the key stakeholders within agree that the Union is ready to accept new members.
