Montenegro dubbed place of peaceful cohabitation of different nations and religious

Podgorica, (MINA) – The National Operational Team (NOT) for the implementation of the Strategy for Combating Violent Extremism will continue to take preventive and proactive steps in order to protect Montenegro’s reputation as a place of peaceful cohabitation of different nations and religions.

The Ministry of Interior said this in a statement on the occasion of the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief, which is being marked for the first time in Montenegro, based on a resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly.

“Freedom of religion and belief is a fundamental human right enshrined in the Constitution and the most important international human rights treaties, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights,” the statement noted.

“The NOT, in cooperation with the civil society and with the support of the OSCE Mission launched, last December, the National Platform for Combating Violent Extremism and Radicalization that Lead to Terrorism, which brings together representatives of relevant state institutions, local self-governments, media, political parties, NGOs, religious communities, academic community and individuals who can help suppress this phenomenon,” the Interior Ministry said.

The goal of the Platform is to promote dialogue as a way to ensure better understanding between different segments of the society, in order for build the resilience of the society as a whole to violent extremism and radicalization.
