Podgorica, (MINA) – Montenegro is marking 100 years of the end of the First World War with mixed feelings, as a date when respect needs to be paid to all victims, but also as a date after which Montenegro’s name disappeared from the world map, Prime Minister Dusko Markovic has stated.
He noted that there was only one country that fought bravely with the Entante Powers, suffering huge losses, only to lose its state name and disappear from the map of the new Europe.
“That is why, in the Montenegrin collective memory, 11 November 1918 is a date that we remember with mixed feelings,” Markovic said.
The Prime Minister underlined that the day of great historic victory of the Modern Europe, to which Montenegro contributed around 20,000 casualties out of the then population of 400,000, is the date when respect needs to be paid to all the victims.
According to Markovic, there are no similar examples of such a small country making such a huge sacrifice.
“But there is also no greater injustice or a harsher punishment towards a country and its people,” the Prime Minister said, referring to the decision to strip Montenegro of its state sovereignty.
