Prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages 78 percent below the EU average

Podgorica, (MINA-BUSINESS) – According to Eurostat, the consumer prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages are 78 percent below the EU average last year.

On 20 June, Eurostat released an analysis of comparative price levels for 37 European countries for the last year, according to which the consumer prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages were 79 percent below the EU average in Albania, 78 percent in Serbia, 76 percent in Bosnia and Herzegovina and 62 percent below the EU average in North Macedonia.

According to a press release issued by Monstat, the group of 37 European countries includes 28 EU Member States, three EFTA members – Island, Norway and Switzerland, five candidate countries – Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Albania and Turkey, and the potential candidate country Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“These results are based on a survey carried out within the framework of the Purchasing Power Parities (PPP) programme, collecting the information on prices for a sufficient number of representative products,” the press release says.

The Purchasing Power Parities (PPP) programme is implemented by Eurostat and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The survey results are expressed in price level indices allowing the comparison of countries’ price levels relative to the EU average.
