Protecting women from violence critical in building fair and safe society

Podgorica, (MINA) – The issues of political participation and economic empowerment of women, as well as the prevention of violence against women, which are in the focus of the Women’s Political Network, are critical for developing a fair and safe society as the key policy goal of the Montenegrin Government.

Deputy Prime Minister Zoran Pazin stated this during today’s meeting with representatives of the Women’s Political Network.

Members of the Women’s Political Network, which brings together representatives of 17 political parties from the government and the opposition, presented their initiatives for amendments to specific legislation, with a view to providing better legal and institutional protection of women against all forms of violence.

Pazin welcomed the professionalism, seriousness and comprehensiveness of the presented initiatives, expressing the government’s readiness to duly consider those initiatives and to implement, through next year’s work program, all the aspects that will contribute to establishing more solid safeguards of safety and equality for women.

He announced that the Government stands ready to involve representatives of the Women’s Political Network in the work of the Government working bodies that will be tasked with drafting legislative amendments and proposing improved safeguards for women’s safety and human rights.

The Deputy Prime Minister pledged the Government determination to make every effort to redress the weaknesses identified in laws and their implementation, adding that the state must ensure efficient institutional and legal protection for the victims and fair punishment for the aggressors.

Representatives of the Women’s Political Network stated that, last year alone, Montenegro spent €9.2 million on redressing the effects of violence against children, adding that investment in more reliable legal and institutional mechanisms of protecting women against violence would produce not only multiple social benefits, but also considerable savings of public funds.
