Protection of children from sex offenders to be improved

Podgorica, (MINA) – Representatives of the Supreme Court, the Justice Ministry, the Supreme State Prosecutor’s Office (VDT), the Ombudsman’s office, NGO Parents and NGO Civic Alliance have reached an agreement on several recommendations for improvement of children protection from sex offenders.

According to the NGO Parents’ press statement, a consultative meeting initiated by that organization and DPM Zoran Pazin, was held in Podgorica on Friday, in which the models of advancing the system of protection were discussed and the findings and conclusions of a comprehensive analysis of the penal policy applied by Montenegrin courts in cases of sexual violence against minors were presented.

The authors of the analysis are Supreme Court judge Radule Kojovic and advisor in that institution Ksenija Jovicevic.

Supreme Court President Vesna Medenica emphasized unreserved readiness of the Montenegrin judiciary to fully contribute, within its competences, to the creation of safe, stable and carefree environment for development of children in Montenegro.

Director of the NGO Parents Kristina Mihailovic noted that the meeting was a result of the cooperation initiated at the beginning of the year, when it was agreed that the Justice Ministry, the Supreme Court and VDT, in cooperation with NGOs, should analyze and put forward recommendations for substantial amendments towards additional protection of children from sexual violence.

She added that concrete activities will be carried out in the period to come in accordance with the agreed recommendations.

The Justice Ministry representative Natasa Radonjic remarked that this ministry was determined to contribute to a more efficient protection of children from sex offenders, first and foremost by keeping an adequate penalty registry of the persons convicted for the crimes related to violation of sexual freedoms of minors.

The meeting agreed that introduction of tougher penalties for crimes related to violation of sexual freedoms of minors should be considered.
