Western Balkans’ perspective can be only European

Podgorica, (MINA) – More engaged behavior of the European Union is of extreme importance for resolving remaining open issues in the region, said Montenegrin president Milo Djukanovic in Berlin.

Djukanovic, who is paying an official visit to Germany, at the invitation of his counterpart Frank Walter Steinmeier, had a lecture in German Foreign Policy Associaiton (DGAP) on the topic “Political perspective of the Balkans, Montenegro and their relations with the EU in 2019”.

Montenegrin president said that integration is never a one-way street.

“It is not only about the relations of Montenegro and the Balkans towards the EU, but also the relation of the EU towards our country and the region. Thus the Berlin process, that I follow from start, as well as the implementation of the Berlin plus agenda, I see as very high quality upgrade of the European politics for the Western Balkans”, said Djukanovic.

Djukanovic remarked that the agreement between Skopje and Athens is the true indicator that even the most difficult problems can be overcome if there is political will of the leaders and benefits that common solutions bring to the both sides.

He expressed his belief that it can be inspirational also for the continuation of the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina.

“Resolving that problem would significantly relax the region, and Serbia as the key country in the Western Balkans would be motivated to be more engaged in the EU process”.

He said that although no one can say what the future of the EU is, he was convinced that the Western Balkans’ perspective can be only European.

Djukanovic remarked that he believed that the common vision and common goals by far overcome political and economic arguments of today.
